Filipinos are truly a unique people regardless of where you put them in the world. It’s true that you can take the Filipino away from the Philippines, but never the other way around. Evidence lies in the humorous yet real fact that there’s always a hint, or at least a few reliable ways of determining whether a resident in any modern house is a Filipino. These are cultural artifacts (that smell of Albatross) that we fail to commend most of the time.
But now, we’re here to celebrate it, by taking a look inside the Pinoy bathroom.
The following items are present in most, if not, all bathrooms in the country (well, those that count as real bathrooms and not wood covered with long leaves).
Tabo and Drum/Balde tandem

This dynamic duo is the Pinoy response to the tissue issue of the western world. Paired with the soap, this becomes the most hygienic tool for any washroom need. This includes Number 2, as well as generally pouring soapy water to clean out stains.
Tawas

Choose your weapon against perspiration: solid or powder? Although the tawas (or alum salt) is nearly if not already phased out, this old school deodorant still can be found in rare occasions. In crystal form, it looks pleasant enough not to be thrown away. Usually, however, this comes in powdered form, and is usually placed in a small canister. This relic still occupies some space in the medicine cabinet for some people.
Plunger and toilet scrub
Going out to get these two can be a pain so Filipinos make it a point that no matter what emergency, these two are just a short grab away from the scene of the crime.
Bimpo (face towel)

While most people leave a huge hand towel in the bathroom, Pinoys usually leave a bimpo, the classic ones having Chinese characters and a blue stripe on either side, with the words “Good Morning” in red script. And although these guys hang around in most bathrooms, they don’t look like they’re used that often.
Product sachets

Filipinos are often victims of the “tingi” belief, which dictates that things that can be bought in the smallest denomination mean more value. In the bathroom setting, this means a clutter of shampoo and conditioner sachets.
Underwear

While fiestas hang flags in the streets, undergarments deck the Pinoy bathroom almost any ordinary day. Whether for aesthetic purposes (doubtful) or lack of space to dry them, Pinoys always find ways to decorate our bathroom abode with what wet colorful resources that we have. Of course, being Pinoy comes with the instinct of resourcefulness. It is from this that you get underwear draped over the shower curtain racks to dry.
Welcome mat

Sometimes, a bathroom could have two or even three mats by its entrance. This is to make sure that the user would wipe his feet. Sometimes it could be taken as a sign that the bathroom floor is wet.
Panghilod
A huge piece of rock might look awkward in the bathroom; to a Filipino, it’s not just normal: it’s cultural. Of course those porous rocks or panghilod are old-school loofahs that Pinoys use to rub out dead skin cells. But today, there are loofahs of different shapes, sizes, as well as materials. However, the purpose is still the same. Despite this, the elusive panghilod is still found in restrooms in the provinces, where old-school is very much well-maintained
Communal towel rack
While it’s easy for one to distinguish his or her frequently used bath towel, some Filipino families have a habit of putting all their unused or ready-to-use bath towels inside the bathroom for an easy change of towel choice.
Multiple clothing hooks
Because westerners like to wear wardrobe and Europeans love to walk naked after a bath, we too have a choice of bathroom exit. Multiple hooks nailed in the bathroom door or wall is where we usually hang our underwear (if they’re not on the shower curtain rack), shirt, and shorts when we take a bath. These little guys conveniently keep our dirty clothes from getting wet.
