Amidst the growing awareness for, and acceptance of the environmental emergency bannered by the threats of climate change, the call and the desire to take a more active role in shaping the future of Mother Earth has breached the high ivory walls of capitalism. Philippine business enterprises have begun the bold yet (in retrospect) inevitable movement towards the adherence to the philosophy and advocacies for the global Green movement.

This turn of events has led to a range of consumer-directed efforts by countless companies, from trade expos to the launch of eco-friendly product lines, to company CSR’s (corporate social responsibility) geared to answer the call for action.

Green: the new color of money

Suddenly, products carrying the banner of environmental preservation have captured the hearts (and cash) of a large part of consumers everywhere.  Ethical consumerism has become a most reliable revenue-generating factor in the global market, and corporations have taken advantage of this trend faster than you can say “revenue stream.”

However, at the end of the day, green products sprouting up everywhere faster than tree saplings are indeed contributing to the eco-cause.  Below are some examples of readily-available green products:

  1. Fair Trade woven bags

Produced by the a social welfare organization aimed to empower and improve the lives of smaller communities, the Fair Trade product line features biodegradable hand-woven, hand-sewn bags made by wives of farmers from the cottage industry.

A fundamental project of the Advocate of Philippine Fair Trade Inc., the production of these bags is aimed to provide significant financial and entrepreneurial assistance to Micro and Small Enterprises by incorporating sheer human creativity, resourcefulness, and honest, eager environmental advocacy.

  2. Luntian Bags

With a cause born out of a suggestion from a magazine article, executive-turned-environmental advocate Ichay Bulaong sprung change with her simple and stylish pro-earth Luntian bags, consequently establishing a livelihood program in San Teodoro, Mabini, Batangas. The bags are made of canvas and are completely reusable, with their main purpose being to help reduce the plastic bag pollution and overall waste buildup in the country.

Ichay’s objective became more concrete when she hired her first seamstress, her occasional dressmaker Aling Guring, who later on delegated the task to other women in the barangay. What was originally conceptualized as an idea to make the environment better sparked an incidental yet superior achievement by helping shape and touch the lives of the impoverished and jobless neighborhood.

Founded by Peping and Joy de Villa, a couple married for 17 years, GIGA simply stands for “God Is Great Always.” The business name intends to connote how a marriage of faith, resilience, hard work, patience and integrity is tantamount to success. Mrs. de Villa explained that the name is not solely given as a marketing strategy; but also for “lucky charm” purposes.

It was 2000 when the de Villas ventured in their new business of selling organic soaps, which at first they were able to keep afloat by repackaging readily-available products. A year after and they began manufacturing their own products. Under their line are natural soaps, spa and aromatherapy products, as well as baby and pet care solutions.

With its primary thrust of caring for the environment, Leyende’s raw materials are mostly imported from certified organic farms and companies, like Rainforest Remedies and Honeybiz Australia Ltd.
