Advocating green living does not limit itself to environmental squabbles, debates, and personal philosophies of recycling, reusability and sustainability. It extends to health practices, and maintaining a good holistic condition.
Together with the search for alternatives to traditional medicine, the growing preference for more natural and safer means has been constantly drawing public attention and enthusiasm. Achieving better health by being one with nature has propelled to the limelight the idea of going organic instead of traditionally pharmaceutical. These alternatives have been proven to bring more positive effects to our health, and the environment.
One curative agent brought about by modern technology and presented to the world from New Zealand has been gaining popularity: the manuka honey.
New “breed” of honey
Scientific breakthroughs in the field of medicine have discovered a new kind of honey that brings about eco-friendly benefits that are not gained from ordinary honey.
A professor by the name of Peter Molan from Waikato Research Unit came across the manuka honey, produced by bees feeding on manuka tea trees.
This type of honey is commonly found in monofloral honey, proven effective in treating the most serious health conditions including stomach ulcer, acid reflux and cancer. This capacity has dubbed the manuka honey as “one of the world’s greatest and effective honeys of all time,” and declared to be much more effective than penicillin. Medical studies have shown that the hydrogen peroxide content of this honey is enough to provide the needed antimicrobial effect without damaging the skin and body tissues. Although honeys have been known for their antibacterial capacity, the manuka honey can prevent the development of the most resilient harmful bacteria.

Honey content
Perhaps the best quality of the manuka honey is that it is usually available raw and unprocessed, making it an all-natural food and vitamin supplement. And even when processed, its antibacterial molecules are not easily destroyed. Furthermore, this stronger antimicrobial capacity prevents catalase, an essential enzyme also found in the body, from losing its effective healing properties upon contact with water and oxygen; the opposite is the case with ordinary honeys.

Types of Manuka Honey
- Ordinary Manuka Honey – this type merely only contains the hydrogen peroxide common in most honeys
- UMF Manuka Honey – this type contains both natural hydrogen peroxide and antibacterial properties. Also, its natural and inherent UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) property gives it an increased antibacterial potency.
UMF
Unique Manuka Factor is a phytochemical-derived used by medical experts to gauge the potency of manuka honey’s antibacterial properties.
UMF, though is not present in all types of manuka honey. To date, the reason for this is still unknown; however a few assumptions point to the fact that bees only gather honey from the nectar of the manuka flower growing from the manuka bush known as Leptospermum scoparium. This undefined event causes the diversity in production of honey in certain areas of the region every year.
