Let’s admit it. We men can be just as vain as women. Knowing that society more often than not regards physical appearance as a significant factor for personal perception, we men are also susceptible to feel that it is our responsibility to – at the very least – look presentable.

Being presentable, however, does not necessarily come with sky-high cost. But some men go to the length of going under the knife just to achieve what they deem to be the most aesthetically pleasing version of themselves, free of any flaws. Below is a list of some popular operations that men subject themselves to, whether for attracting women or merely for self-gratification:

It should also be noted beforehand that anyone considering any of the following surgical procedures must consult a board-certified expert for optimum safety and satisfaction:

Penile Enlargement (Lengthening)

Penile enhancement, perhaps primarily designed to treat the severe case of micropenis, is now being considered by men who apparently believe in the principle of “the longer, the better”. The general procedure is based on the fact that one-third to one-half of the penis is located inside the
body and attached to the pubic bone by the suspensory ligament.

Penile lengthening involves uncovering the said ligament, thus allowing the penis to protrude farther outward. A horizontal incision is made along the pubic region (not on the penis itself). Because of this, the penis is not harmed and the scar made after closing the incision site is concealed by pubic hair. Swelling and bruising is expected to resolve within 1-2 weeks but post-operative instructions (e.g. avoiding the following: intake of aspirins, smoking, exercise and sexual activity) are to be conducted within 4-6 weeks. The surgery is most suitable for men who have a healthy body. Prior to the operation, the patient must also avoid intake of aspirins and smoking (within 2-3 weeks), refrain from driving (within 24 hours) and avoid eating and drinking (within 8 hours).

Face Lift (Rhytidectomy) and Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)

Face Lift:

Men, especially those whose face value is of great significance to their careers, prefer to undergo face lift procedure to remove wrinkles, eliminate age spots and improve face and jaw appearance.

The procedure is mainly composed of the introduction of the anesthetic, the creation of incisions and the alteration of the facial structure (instruments and techniques depending
primarily on the desired result of the patient).

Nose Surgery:

This type of surgery is growing in popularity among men. Aside from correcting nose shape after injuries and accidents, men also undergo the procedure in order to improve overall facial structure, as the nose is considered to be one of the most defining features of a man’s face, along with th eyes and jaw.

The standard procedure first involves making an incision either on the columella (i.e. the skin that
separates the nostrils) or inside the nose. The cartilage and bone that builds the framework is then exposed and sculpted to achieve the desired shape and profile. The skin is stitched back into place to finish the surgery.

For both face lift and nose surgery, complete healing may be attained after several weeks. In order to be eligible for face lifts, one must possess supple skin. On the other hand, qualifying for a nose surgery requires a mature nasal bone and a stable nose shape.

Pectoral Implant

The desire to have a muscular, more defined chest leads some men to resort to pectoral implant. The usual procedure is very similar to breast augmentation in women: incisions are made at the sides of the chest to insert the implant. The only main difference is that the composition of the male pectoral implant is a gelatinous solid while that of the female counterpart is more liquid.

The pectoral implant’s composition leads to a smaller probability of breakage; but even if breakage occurs, leaks are not to be expected as the interior of the implant is similar to the shell. Therefore, this type of surgery has been claimed to be safer and more effective in men than in women. A physically fit body is oftentimes the only requirement before undergoing pectoral surgery.

Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia or the possession of excessive breast tissues in males may be corrected through breast reduction, a type of liposuction. The traditional method for breast reduction follows the
general procedure for liposuction (discussed in the next point). Laser Lipolysis, the
latest treatment known for removing excess breast tissue, simultaneously destroys the fat cells and tightens the skin.

Although pain may be experienced right after the surgery, the side effects will begin to subside at least 10 days after surgery, as long as the patient wears a protective surgical body stocking and the surgical procedure was done correctly. Breast reduction is most appropriate and feasible for those who are physically fit but unfortunately have stubborn pockets of fat around the chest.

Liposuction

Although commonly associated with women, liposuction is becoming a traditional figure- refining surgery for men.

Male liposuction is slightly more expensive as compared to those with women because:

(a) fat in men are generally fibrous and thus, more difficult and more time
consuming to remove;

(b) men often request to extract fats from their chest, abdomen and/or “love handles” – body areas known to contain the most fibrous fats; and

(c) men are bulkier than women and therefore require more extensive treatment.

Liposuction is conducted by applying a regular anesthetic and inserting a small tube-like apparatus called a cannula through tiny incisions made by the surgeon. The cannula then breaks up and vacuums away unwanted fat deposits beneath the skin. Because
of the risk of potential scarring and post-surgical bruising, plenty of recovery time is necessary. One item of the criteria for the ideal candidate for liposuction is having an elastic skin and being able to adjust to variations in diet and exercise.

Other kinds of liposuction include facial slimming and rejuvenation, and breast reduction (earlier mentioned).

Tummy Tuck

Also called abdominoplasty, tummy tuck is conducted on men who want to flatten their abdomens and tighten the muscles of their abdominal walls – a result not achieved by liposuction alone. The procedure is very much dependent on the patient’s desired results.

Complete Abdominoplasty is best for patients who demand the most correction, and requires more than 2 hours to accomplish. A long incision, usually made within the pubic hair area, allows the surgeon to manipulate and contour the skin.

Partial Abdominoplasty is best for patients with the least correction, and often requires less than 2 hours to finish. Short incisions are made just below the navel, allows the surgeon to separate the skin between the navel and the incisions without relocating the belly button.

Recovery time for tummy tuck is usually longer than for liposuction. Several weeks to months are needed as swelling and pain will arise right after the operation.

An individual scheduled for a tummy tuck must:

(a) stop medications and, if applicable, smoking a month or so prior to surgery;

(b) avoid excessive dieting

(c) transform his chosen recovery area into a place where everything is easily accessible – from ice packs and petroleum jellies to hand-held showers and loose clothing – as movement during the recovery period will be minimal;

(d) no longer plan for weight loss after surgery; and

(e) be willing to accept the appearance, prominence and permanence of scars.

Hair Transplant

Hair loss is more evident in older men than in older women due to the abundance of androgens
(hormones linked to masculine characteristics) in the systems of the former. As a result, a large number of men experiencing pattern baldness undergo hair transplant.

The relatively simple operation involves transferring healthy hair follicles taken from a strip of skin usually from the back or side of the scalp, to the problem area, such as the front of the head when the hairline begins to recede, or the middle of the top part of the head (a bald patch). The surgery usually involves about 500 micrograftings, and spans for about 2 years.

It should be noted that the procedure will only be effective if there are healthy skin portions on the head available to be used for grafting.
