Just like any other parent with a toddler, you are well aware that you will eventually move on to the sensitive phase of choosing a school. We all know that education is vital to every child’s advancement, and that preschools serve as the first building block to their progress.

What you have to know is that there is a wide array of preschools out there. Most of them good, a few of them relatively new while some are established in the field of child rearing and development. As parents, the only thing that you want to be assured of is that your child goes to the perfect school. However, perfect does not exist. The next best thing is to look for the best preschool for your child by considering these factors:

  • Cost
  • Wanting the best for your child sometimes means having to spend a lot for it. Tuition fees for some pre-schools range from Php70,000 to Php100,000 pesos per year. However, prices do vary depending on the kind of the pre-school.

  • Distance

  • Drive around the neighborhood and you might just spot a pre-school that’s only a quick walk away from your house. A pre-school that’s nearby is a good choice because you won’t have to wake your child earlier than necessary in order to prepare him or her for school. Also, bringing your child to and from school will be a breeze. The short distance makes it easy for you to check up on your child as well.

  • Facilities
  • Check the school’s facilities. Is there a playground? Are the tables and chairs in good condition? Is there ample space in the classroom? Are the educational materials appropriate? Is there enough ventilation? Is the place clean? You can even take the state of the bathrooms into account.

  • Philosophy
  • Different pre-schools have different concentrations. One might be more concerned with developing your child’s IQ, while another might be focused on EQ. Some pre-schools might include religious teachings. Other schools are oriented towards music, dance, or the arts. Some are more about traditional learning. Still some schools adjust their instructions depending on your child’s particular intelligence – spatial, musical, interpersonal, etcetera.

  • Reputation
  • Here is where your amigas come in. Ask them about the schools they sent their own kids to. Do they recommend these schools? Ask them about the pros and cons of sending your child there. You can also browse through schools’ websites and read through parents’ testimonials about them. Also check if these schools have been assessed or accredited by organizations such as PAASCU (Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities).

  • Teachers
  • Knowing the people you will entrust your child to is important. Talk to them as soon as you get the chance to. This will enable you to gauge their character. Will they be kind to your child? Are they encouraging? Are they well-equipped to have a good influence on your child at this sensitive age? Do you feel at ease with them?  It also wouldn’t hurt to go over their credentials.

To enroll, usually you just have to come in with your child for an interview with the teacher or school official. There are several schools that hold entrance examinations for new students for the purpose of analyzing the child’s basic motor and cognitive skills.
