Despite the versatility and fickleness of fashion trends, every woman must know that there are a number of wardrobe items that must always be on-hand.  However large and expansive one’s wardrobe may be, the basic closet essentials reveal themselves to be the highlight of any closet, in one way or another.

Have these ten items handy at all times, and you will never go wrong:

  1. The little black dress

At least a good number of women know of this closet must-have.  The little black dress is that one piece of garment flexible enough to be worn on any occasion. Its degree of formality can be altered depending on the accessories and the shoes you wear with it.  Whether it’s a casual dinner with friends, or a formal occasion with big-deal names, the black dress that cuts off at just the right part of the legs can be your saving grace when you realize you have absolutely nothing to wear.  One might say that the little black dress in your closet is like the fire extinguisher in your apartment building: always handy and available in case of an emergency.

  2. The all-around top

This top should be something you can wear for whatever day or occasion, especially when you feel stuck in a fashion rut. These requirements pretty much make it clear that this top should not be too formal, or too casual.  It should be something you can wear under a jacket on casual days, and look just as good on you during those TGIF nights.

  3. A great pair of jeans.

A good pair of jeans can be worn anywhere, whether going to the mall, a walk in the park, a casual date, a party, or even to work. It should be comfortable and it should fit you nicely. Be mindful, however: torn jeans are never neutral and must never be considered as such.  Pick a pair that is both comfortable, and respectable-looking.

  4. The skirt

This is pretty much a no-brainer for any woman; but for those who have grown up cherishing the comfort of wearing pants, here’s a wake-up call: you will need to wear a skirt in at least one occasion in your life.  Pick one that falls just above, or just below the knee; anything too short or too long destroys the goal which is to have a skirt you can wear anywhere, and look good in.  And make sure to pick a basic color that can go with any top; white or black would be the best bet.

  5. The white button-down blouse

The best thing about the white button-down blouse is that it is arguably the most versatile item one can own.  It’s the equivalent of the little black dress, but with something extra: it’s what you throw on yourself when the occasion is a bit too formal for the all-around top.  Another notable characteristic of this piece of garment is that everything about it is perfectly neutral, from the color to the cut.  No matter what the sleeve length may be, the white button-down blouse can be dressy or casual.  Another lifesaver.

  6. The jacket

Just in case you travel to an area during a cold season like winter, there is nothing like a comfortable jacket to keep you warm.  Pick a jacket that accentuates your natural curves.  The perfect one is something that you can wear with a skirt, or a pair of jeans.

  7. The blazer

What some women do not realize about blazers is that they are not and never were confined to the office wear category.  Wear it over a good fitting shirt or tank top, throw on a pair of leg-accentuating jeans, slip into some boots, heels or sandals, and you have a casual, smart outfit.  Spice it up with a great necklace that falls across the chest.  Pin a broach on the lapel for an added highlight.

  8. The black slacks

A pair of good-fitting slacks is the first step to putting together that outfit for a big interview or an important meeting.  The color exudes formality, and can never go wrong with whatever corporate event you suddenly have to dash off to.  Also, black is very flattering, whatever your body shape might be.

  9. The clutch bag

This is the basic accessory for any party season. There is absolutely no excuse for showing up at a cocktail gathering with a backpack hanging off your shoulder.  Pick a clutch that will go well with whatever dress you’re wearing.  Again, black is the safest color to bet on.  Make sure that it’s small enough to remain an accessory and not a miniature sack, but big enough to contain your phone, wallet, keys, and compact.

When shopping for one, try and get one with a removable strap that you can attach to it, giving you more freedom to move whether on the dance floor, or doing whatever task that requires both your hands.

  10. The heels

Interestingly, heeled footwear, considered to be the most formal amongst all other kinds, may also be the most neutral kind.  Think about it: a good pair of heels can go well with jeans, skirts, even shorts (not the Bermuda kind, please).  As long as the heel length is comfortable enough for a casual Sunday stroll, and high enough to be seen clicking on the marble floor of the most upscale party of the season, that pair is good to go.  Just a reminder: be sure to have a pair completely devoid of any loud, garish designs like fluffy straps or any eyesore add-ons.  It’s not impossible for an entirely respectable outfit to be thrown off by bad shoes; everyone has seen it happen at least once.
